CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chilled Ponds, a business in the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake, was evacuated Wednesday afternoon because of a strange odor.

Captain Scott Saunders with Chesapeake Fire said crews were dispatched to 1416 Stephanie Way at 11:52 a.m. for smoke in the building. Firefighters arrived to the scene at 12 p.m. and didn’t find smoke or flames, but found a haze and chemical odor in the air at Chilled Ponds.

The building was evacuated. A maintenance person was checked by medics at the scene, but was not taken to the hospital. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews weren’t able to determine what the odor is and where it’s coming from. Fans were used to ventilate the building and firefighters took air readings to make sure the business was safe before allowing people to reenter.
