NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 35-year-old man was taken into custody following a barricade situation Wednesday morning at a shooting scene in Newport News.
Newport News police say they were called to an apartment complex around 7:30 a.m. for a reported shooting.
The victim, a 31-year-old Newport News man, was shot in the upper groin area Wednesday morning. Police spokesman Brandon Maynard tells WAVY.com it appeared to have been a shotgun wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition.
A suspect was believed to be barricaded in another apartment at the same complex — which prompted police to call a SWAT team to the scene.
The suspect — 35-year-old Darrell Chaney — was taken into custody Wednesday. No injuries were reported during the tactical situation. Police say Chaney has prior charges for damaging property, assault and failure to appear out of both Newport News and Virginia Beach.
Police say Chaney was taken into custody Wednesday after he had set a small fire in the apartment.
Charges are pending for Wednesday’s incident, according to police.
