VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Republican Scott Taylor defeated Democrat Shaun Brown Tuesday night in the race for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.

Taylor, who has served in the Virginia House of Delegates and as a Navy SEAL, told supporters gathered at the Westin in Town Center he was “completely humbled,” and that there was “nothing little about the big odds we that we faced.”

Taylor defeated Congressman Randy Forbes (R) in the primary election in June.

“We had a tough primary. We were outspent 10 to one. That’s not something small,” Taylor said.

The seat in the U.S. House of Representatives was previously held by Congressman Scott Rigell (R), who decided not to run for reelection.

“I’m humbled that the citizens of the 2nd District would entrust me with this responsibility,” Taylor said. “We’re ready to get up to Washington and make a difference.”

Taylor said he would fight for Hampton Roads’ military community and address sequestration. He has already started working on legislation and planned to make changes to entitlement programs, he said.

“I want to work for everybody,” Taylor said.
