VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach man was sentenced Monday to 23 years in prison for killing his mother in 2014.
25-year-old Blair Joshua Carr, formerly of the 900 block of Sedley Road, was sentenced to 35 years in prison with 12 years suspended.
Carr was found guilty of first-degree murder after a trial on April 14.
Prosecutors say on March 22, 2014, Carr murdered his 50-year-old mother, Rosetta Carr, in the home they shared on Sedley Road.
Carr had been thinking about taking his own life for some time, and decided that if he killed his mother, he would go through with killing himself because the alternative would be a lengthy term in prison, prosecutors say. He planned the killing for weeks, according to prosecutors, and hid a knife under his bed in the days leading up to the murder. On March 22, Carr and his mother got into an argument because she told him he needed to get a job or he would no longer be able to stay at her house. Carr beat her and stabbed her repeatedly. Prosecutors say he even went as far as going to get a second and third knife because the first two broke.
After killing his mother, Carr stayed in the house with her body and wrote a letter to police explaining his reason for the murder. Two days later, he called police and admitted to killing her. The police responded and determined Rosetta Carr had been dead for some time.
Carr again confessed to killing his mother in an interview with detectives, according to prosecutors.
