Police: Elderly resident shoots masked home invader

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say an elderly Pennsylvania man shot and killed a masked man who broke into his home and demanded money.

Police say the 81-year-old Uniontown resident awoke at about 1:30 a.m. Friday to find a man in a skull mask standing over him. After a struggle, the homeowner fired a shot, hitting the intruder in the lower torso.

Police found the body of 40-year-old Franklin Schrout, of Morgantown, West Virginia, in a neighboring yard. The resident had minor injuries.

Lt. Tom Kolencik said the older man was “remorseful, shook up” and said he wished he was stronger so that he could have fought off the other man rather than shooting him.

No charges are expected but a report will be sent to the Fayette County district attorney’s office.
