VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Police say a fight at a popular section of the Oceanfront over the weekend led to a homicide investigation.
Police on Monday identified the victim as 25-year-old Brijan Mekyel Brown, of Norfolk.
Cellphone video taken from a nearby apartment complex shows the minutes after a man was shot near 34th street and Atlantic Avenue at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
People living in the area told 10 On Your Side they first heard nearly one dozen gunshots, and then sirens. Some watched from their apartments as a man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. They say the scene looked like a battle zone.
“I thought there were fireworks. Living down here you hear them all summer. But it was just too loud and three in the morning. It was just weird,” said Jason Cotton, who lives a few blocks away on 34th street.
“Tape everywhere. It was insane. I’m not sure who did it. I didn’t see anybody but we heard it and we saw the aftermath,” said Eric Hughes, who was walking along Pacific Avenue when he heard the gunshots.
He said, “It sounded like firecrackers. Loud firecrackers going off.”
Bullet holes in nearby walls show where some of the shots landed. Several people say they saw a large crowd involved in the fight.
It’s something Hughes says is strange for this part of town. “I don’t know. It’s like crazy to me. Usually on this side of the oceanfront you probably don’t hear about that kind of stuff,” he said.
That feeling was shared by many others who were in the area.
Shannon Smith, who had just come to Virginia Beach the night before the shooting, said, “It could’ve been us and yeah I’ve owned here for 10 years and that’s scary, right here on the corner of all these good, nice hotels and resorts.”
“I’ve lived here my whole life so I was very surprised when I woke up at 3 in the morning and heard gunshots,” said Cotton.
10 On Your Side is still working to find out why this fight happened and who was involved.
Virginia Beach police say their homicide unit is investigating.
