NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A woman and her dog were attacked in Norfolk Friday morning by a pit bull on the loose, police say.
According to officers, Animal Control was dispatched to the area of Glenrock Road near Poplar Hall Road for reports of two pit bulls on the loose.
A police spokesman tells 10 On Your Side one of those dogs ended up near the front entrance to Costco. That’s when it attacked a dog, which was on a leash. The pit bull then ran inside Costco, where police say a customer was able to restrain it.
The dog, Tasha, was taken to a local veterinarian for surgery. Police say Tasha’s owner was also bitten, but it’s unclear which dog caused that injury.
10 On Your Side spoke to several neighbors on Honaker Avenue, where the pit bulls live. They tell us this is not the first time the dogs have gotten lose. Two neighbors tell WAVY News they’ve called Animal Control in the past.
The dog’s owner, 27-year-old Geoffrey McKenzie, called the incident a “fight.”
“I feel terrible that they got into a fight and that she got bit,” McKenzie said. “I just feel really bad, I never want that to happen to her.”
Police say the second pit bull, which was running away on Glenrock Road, was also retrieved.
“I just got home from deployment and I’m trying to outfit the house so that the dogs don’t get out, but they’ve got a ton of energy and just love to run,” McKenzie said.
Police say the two pit bulls are being held at the Norfolk Animal Shelter for a 10-day quarantine. McKenzie is facing two charges for animal at large.
