Newport News police take barricaded fugitive into custody

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — An armed fugitive barricaded himself inside a Newport News residence Friday night. SWAT teams and police took him into custody after a five-hour standoff.

At 7:09 p.m., officers spotted a fugitive, 19-year-old Mostapha Atwa, in the 700 block of 74th Street, near Marshall Avenue. Atwa is wanted in an October robbery, which happened off Shoe Lane near Christopher Newport University.

Police tried to get Atwa to come out of the home several times, but he refused. SWAT teams were called to respond.

Around 12:15 a.m., Atwa was finally taken into custody. No one was injured.
