NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate tried to escape custody Friday while being escorted from the Norfolk Consolidated Courthouse back to the city jail.

At about 12:15 p.m., the sheriff’s office says Ronald Perry managed to get through an opening in a chain link fence behind the court building.

Perry was quickly caught and taken back into custody by Norfolk Sheriff’s Office court security personnel.

No one was injured.

Perry is currently serving a 58-year sentence at Sussex II Prison. He was picked up on Oct. 21 from the prison for a court hearing on a violation of good behavior. His original court date was set for Oct. 24, but was continued to Friday.

Perry was charged with escape without force.
