Man sentenced to 60 days in jail for deadly Virginia Beach crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A judge sentenced a Maryland man to 60 days in jail Thursday for a fatal crash in Virginia Beach.

The judge also gave 27-year-old John A. Pignataro a $500 fine.

The crash happened on Northampton Boulevard at the intersection of Pleasure House Road in May. Police said Pignataro was driving a maroon truck with a trailer and crashed into a Lexus from behind.

The driver of the Lexus, 27-year-old Erik Raimud Schmeiser, of Norfolk, was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Thursday, Pignataro pleaded no contest. That means he admits there is sufficient evidence to prove his guilt, without admitting fault. This plea gets recorded as a guilty plea.

Pignataro noted he plans to appeal his sentence to circuit court.
