SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate was found dead early Wednesday morning in a minimum security dorm at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Jail officials say 54-year-old Larry D. Drommerhausen appears to have taken his own life.

Jail staff found Drommerhausen unconscious and unresponsive shortly after 4 a.m. Medical staff responded, along with Suffolk EMS. Drommerhausen was then pronounced dead.

Drommerhausen was being held on federal charges for production of child pornography. He arrived at the jail on May 2.

The Suffolk Police Department is investigating Drommerhausen’s death with the cooperation of the jail. In any death or serious incident, the jail conducts a separate administrative internal investigation as well.

Drommerhausen’s body was taken to the state Medical Examiner’s office.

Jail officials say the last inmate suicide at Western Tidewater Regional Jail was September 12, 2014.
