Isle of Wight business owner opens up about brutal attack

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) – The search continues for a suspect who attacked an employee in the back of an Isle of Wight County restaurant. The woman was closing Virginia BBQ when a man grabbed her.

“I’m terrified,” said owner Cyndi McGuire. “I’ve been terrified.”

This restaurant along Carrollton Boulevard in Isle of Wight County was always a source of comfort for McGuire.

“My safe haven is my restaurant,” said added.

But that changed last Tuesday. McGuire was finishing up for the night when she went out back to walk an employee to her car in the dark alleyway behind the business. On her way back inside, she heard a noise over by the dumpsters.

“I then felt something hit me in the back of the head,” McGuire said. “I thought for a minute something fell, so I was kind of stunned. When I turned back around, someone just kept hitting me.”

The attack continued. McGuire couldn’t get away.

“He tried to choke me and I dropped to the ground,” McGuire said. “I just tried to hit him as much as I could, because he was punching me in the face.”

The man never said a word and didn’t take anything before he ran off.

“I was sliding across the sidewalk just to get away and I was yelling,” she said.

McGuire ended up with bruises everywhere. She spent the night in the hospital. She believe she was the target.

Deputies say they are looking into leads and are waiting for DNA evidence to come back.

McGuire says this whole thing is a nightmare and she just wants the suspect behind bars.

“I will do whatever I need to do to make sure they get caught,” McGuire added.

There weren’t cameras behind the business and there was no one else was around. Deputies say they have interviewed several people but haven’t made an arrest.
