SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police say skeletal remains not associated with a vault at a Suffolk cemetery were found Tuesday afternoon.

Dispatchers received a call at 2:54 p.m. that unsecured skeletal remains, possibly human, were found at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, located in the 8300 block of Crittenden Road.

Police say the remains were not associated with a vault there. A burial vault is a container that encloses a casket.

Graves in the cemetery date back as far as a century or more in some areas.

Police said Thursday that there is no reason to believe foul play is suspected.

Construction crews were renovating the site because of erosion. The work is being put on hold as Suffolk police investigate.
