VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach City Council on Tuesday approved a request by developers of a proposed arena at the Oceanfront for a 60-day extension to secure funding for the $200 million project.

Council approved the extension 9-1. Councilwoman Barbara Henley voted against the extension. Councilman James Wood was not in attendance.

Council rejected the proposed deal on October 4. Three council members voted against the proposal to transfer the land to the developer, United States Management, which resulted in an 8-3 vote. The item needed a super majority of nine votes to pass.

Council’s rejection means huge setback for Oceanfront arena plan

Council has not yet given final approval to the project.

The 18,500 seat arena, proposed for 19th Street, has been a topic of discussion for the city for three years.
