Driver seriously injured after fleeing police, crashing into gate at Naval Station Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A short police chase ended early Sunday morning with a man crashing his car into the main gate of Naval Station Norfolk.

Just after 4 a.m., officers stopped the driver of a Nissan on Hampton Boulevard near Terminal Boulevard, according to a spokesperson for the Norfolk Police Department. The driver sped away, and officers lost sight of the car.

The driver had crashed into Gate 1 at Naval Station Norfolk, investigators said. The gate was expected to remain closed until at least 9:15 a.m. Sunday.

Paramedics took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries. No one else was in the car.

Police have not said why they stopped him, or why he sped away.
