Portsmouth murder suspect arrested in New Jersey

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – U.S. Marshals have arrested a suspect wanted in connection with a deadly shooting that happened on October 20.

29-year-old Robert Lamont McClure Jr. was taken into custody in Paterson, New Jersey, Thursday morning.

On October 20, Portsmouth police responded to a shooting in the 60 block of Dale Drive. Officers arrived to the scene and found a man shot. The victim was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Around 7 a.m. Thursday, Marshals, along with the Paterson Police Department, arrested McClure at a residence in the 300 block of Union Avenue without incident.

McClure is being charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is being held at the Passaic County Jail awaiting return to Virginia.

Following McLure’s arrest Thursday, police released the victim’s name: 28-year-old Steven A. Spruill of Portsmouth.
