UPDATE: Miranda Harwood pleaded guilty to child neglect during an August hearing. She is scheduled for sentencing on January 1, 2018.
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A mother is charged in a unique case of child abuse. Police arrested 23-year-old Miranda Harwood last week. She’s accused of tampering with her 3-year-old son’s medical equipment.
Harwood spent Tuesday morning in court. Her family and friends clung together inside the courtroom. Her mother, Nancy Flynn, can’t believe the charges brought against her daughter: child abuse.
“She’s always been there for him,” Flynn said. “She’s taken him where they tell her to take him. She just listens to what they say. She has his best interests.”
Inside court, prosecutors told a judge this case started in early September. That’s when Miranda Harwood took her 3-year-old son to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. The visit was part of ongoing medical issues he’s had since he was born.
“He has a chromosomal deletion. There’s only seven cases like him in the U.S.,” Harwood told 10 On Your Side from jail. “So they don’t know a whole lot about it.”
Harwood and a judge watched video from that September day. Harwood said in the video she was seen tightening one of her son’s tubes so it wouldn’t disconnect.
“But a couple seconds later, you see it separate and I didn’t know it was undone,” she said. “Those lines come undone all the time, you can ask any of the nurses, because they screw on at both ends.”
10 On Your Side requested a copy of the video, but that request was denied. Tuesday, in a bond hearing, a judge watched the video.
The judge weighed what she watched, with what she believed to be Harwood’s mental state and then denied bond to the young mother.
Harwood’s attorney vigorously disagreed with the decision.
“I don’t really understand the ruling where she said she was a danger to herself, there’s no evidence of that at all,” attorney Robert Wegman said.
Harwood said the video shows isn’t what it seems.
Harwood has a court date set for June 28, 2018.
