The Virginia Senate 1st District seat became vacant following the sudden passing of Virginia Sen. John Miller. Governor McAuliffe called for a special election to fill the seat. State Delegate Monty Mason resigned from the Virginia 93rd House District to run for the 1st District State Senate. Mason will take on Republican Thomas Holston and Independent John Bloom at the polls on November 8.

Monty Mason is the Delegate for the Peninsula’s 93rd District, representing Newport News, Williamsburg, York County and James City County. He was elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2015. His legislative committee assignments include the House Counties, Cities and Towns Committee and House Courts of Justice Committee. He currently serves as a Senior Director at Visa, Inc., where he focuses on fraud prevention and helping reduce risk for banks and their consumers.
Prior to being elected in 2013, Monty served as Chairman of the Williamsburg Economic Development Authority. He currently serves on the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance Board, the Historic Triangle Collaborative Economic Diversity Task Force, and the development committee of Child Development Resources.
Monty was named a “Legislative Hero” for two straight years by the League of Conservation Voters for his votes to protect our environment.
Monty received his bachelor’s degree in government from the College of William and Mary and is an active alumnus. He is a member of the College’s Challenge 1 Strategic Planning Committee, and served three years as Chairman of the Athletic Educational Foundation. In 2002, William and Mary awarded him the Young Alumni Service Award.
Monty lives in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Williamsburg with his wife, Pamela, who works at the College of William and Mary and serves as the President of the PTA at Mathew Whaley Elementary School. They have two daughters, Taylor Anne (7) and Hawley (5).

I have been a lifelong Newport News native. I have spent a lifetime serving as a police officer and fireman.
I believe my experiences and my Newport News roots position me to represent the 1st Senate District of Virginia well.

John Bloom earned his Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from Pennsylvania State University before earning his Master of Science in Environmental Technology from the New York Institute of Technology.
Bloom previously lived in New York, and ran for the New York State Assembly as a Conservative Party candidate and a Right To Life Party candidate in the 1990s.
