Man accused in deadly Farm Fresh shooting pleads not guilty

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A man charged in a deadly shooting at a Farm Fresh in James City County pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and a gun charge Monday.

Police say 55-year-old Brian Alexander Hicks was armed with a .45-caliber handgun when he entered the store on the morning of April 17. Gabriel “Gabe” Maness, 34, was shopping inside the Farm Fresh that morning around 8 a.m., when he was shot several times. He died at the scene.

According to police, Hicks shot Maness, though it’s still not clear why.

Hicks has been found competent to stand trial, which is set to take place on February 22, 2017.
