RALEIGH, N.C. (WAVY) – More than 11,000 people received Disaster Food Service benefits cards on the first day federal assistance was available to those affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Governor Pat Mcrory announced that people in the 18 counties slammed by the storm could apply for the benefits, after his request for the assistance was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This benefit is for individuals who are not current recipients of Food and Nutrition Services, or food stamp benefits.

Residents may qualify for assistance for a one-month period if their home was damaged or destroyed, have disaster related expenses or they lost income or had food loss as a result of a power outage or household flooding resulting from Hurricane Matthew. Eligibility is based on available income and resources.
