Coast Guard medvacs fishing captain to hospital

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WAVY) — The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a fishing boat off Hatteras Inlet Saturday evening.

The Coast Guard Sector North Carolina says the command center in Wilmington received a call around 8:45 p.m. from the 73-foot commercial fishing boat named Capt Alex, reporting its captain was experiencing severe chest pains.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City arrived on scene at 10:13 p.m. and lowered a rescue swimmer to the boat.

The patient was hoisted from the boat to the helicopter in a rescue basket and flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

“Sector North Carolina is very pleased with the actions of the crew from Air Station Elizabeth City,” said Chief Warrant Officer Keith Moore, command duty officer in the sector command center Sunday. “Despite the many challenges associated with hoisting at night, they were able to safely remove the captain and deliver him to the hospital to receive the medical attention he needed.”
