Man arrested in Newport News on drug charge, $10K of narcotics seized

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man is facing a drug possession with intent to sell charge after authorities raided a hotel room early Thursday morning.

Authorities say Newport News police officers were investigating a drug complaint on Hornsby Lane early Thursday morning. An investigation lead officers to obtain a search warrant for a room at an Extended Stay America.

One officer saw the suspect leaving the hotel and disregard a traffic signal. Police eventually stopped and detained him at Fountain Way and Merchant Walk while the search was being conducted.

Officers seized an undisclosed amount of US currency, a digital scale, items consistent with distribution of narcotics and “a significant amount of narcotics” valued at $10,000.

Jamar Edward Hayes was arrested at 2:43 a.m. Thursday and has been charged with possession with intent to distribute a schedule I or II substance.
