Providence Forge man charged in Hampton homicide investigation

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man from Providence Forge who was shot during an altercation has been charged in a Hampton homicide investigation.

Jakwan Barnes, a 20-year-old Hampton man, was found shot to death outside of a home on Peterborough Drive last Wednesday. Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say an investigation showed Angel Rivas was shot during an altercation between several people at a house on the 1st block of Peterborough Drive. Two men forced their way into the home with two people inside, leading to the altercation.

Rivas reportedly went to a local hospital to be treated for a non life-threatening injury.

Police say Rivas has been charged with five counts use of a firearm in commission of a felony, two counts attempted robbery, abduction, attempted maiming, burglary while armed and wearing a mask in public.

Rivas remains in the hospital right now.

The circumstances around the shooting are still under investigation.
