CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A 33-year-old man drowned in the ocean near Carova Beach Tuesday.

Currituck County Fire & EMS says Brandon Bryk, of Nederland, Colorado, was swimming near mile post 15 in the 4×4 wheel area of South Swain’s Quarter. He was swimming alone when family members noticed he was struggling. Bystanders pulled the man from the water at 3:21 p.m. By the time life guards arrived to the scene, he was unconscious and in cardiac arrest.

Crews from the Carova Beach and Corolla Whalehead Station responded and provided advanced life support care. Nightingale Air Ambulance was requested to respond. However, the man couldn’t be resuscitated. He was pronounced dead at 4:01 p.m.

Officials say the ocean has had strong rip currents and larger than average waves lately. Swimmers should be careful or avoid the ocean completely while these conditions exist.
