Portsmouth man sentenced on federal gun and drug charges

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – 27-year-old Kenneth Ray Meeks was sentenced on two felony charges in Norfolk federal court Monday afternoon.

He received a five-year, seven-month sentence. His defense team had hoped for less time after Meeks testified against his own father, Kenneth Matthews, more than a year ago on charges related to gun and drug charges.

Kenneth Ray Meeks entered a guilty plea on one charge conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

After he was sentenced, Meeks was immediately taken into custody. His family was emotional after the sentence was handed down. Just four weeks ago, Meeks’ wife gave birth to their son. He is now the father of three young children.

Matthews will be sentenced on January 23.
