ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection to a robbery at a Dollar General store in Isle of Wight County.

Dispatchers received a call at 9:14 a.m. on September 30, reporting a robbery and abduction at the store, which is located 4787 Old Stage Highway, in Smithfield.

The Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office says a man in a black hoodie with his face covered robbed the store, abducted one of the employees and forced them to drive down the road in the employee’s car.

“The clerk thought that the guy was gonna take his car,” Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Tommy Potter said. “But then the robber said, ‘No you go, you’re going to drive me.’”

The suspect got out of the vehicle a few miles away.

17-year-old Lance A. Wright, of Surry County, was arrested on Friday, October 7.

Normally, authorities will not release the names of minors arrested or charged in cases. However, the sheriff’s office says Wright was declared an adult by a court of law. He was taken to Western Tidewater Regional Jail and has no bond.

Police are still investigating.
