PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Some police officers in Portsmouth spent Thursday with crayons, coloring books and kids.

The officers brought coloring books donated to them by the Friends of Portsmouth Juvenile Court, and colored with children at the Tidewater Community College Child Development Center for the “Coloring With Cops” event.

The police department is trying to find ways to reach out to each age group within the community.

During the event, Portsmouth police unveiled a new program called “Hugs Not Harm,” sponsored by the Code 9 Project.

The kids took a pledge to be good citizens and received free tee-shirts and wristbands from Code 9.
