Man shot while walking home from restaurant in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Kate’s Trace Circle Tuesday night.

According to police, they were called to the area at 9:44 p.m. and upon arrival, officers made contact with a man who was sitting on a couch with gunshot wounds in both of his legs. The victim told police he was walking home from a nearby restaurant when an unknown black male walked up behind him and asked for spare change. The victim said he did not have spare change and when he turned around, the suspect had a gun pointed at him. The suspect lowered the gun and fired multiple shots. He then fled the scene on foot.

After being shot, the victim ran to a nearby apartment where he knew residents. He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as 5’7 to 5’9, medium complexion, cornrows, full beard, and wearing a black trench coat with olive pants.

The investigation is ongoing.
