Police: 70-year-old Hampton man shot dead in his home

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a 70-year-old Hampton man was shot and killed inside his home. Police found him on Sunday.

At 12:35 p.m., dispatchers received a call for a report of an unresponsive man in a home in the 1900 block of Somerville Drive.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Donald Burrell, 70, in his home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Burrell was pronounced dead on scene.

Police say they are still working to determine a motive. There is no suspect information at this time.

Friends say Burrell owned a home remodeling business and mostly worked and lived alone. He was an active member of Miracle Temple Baptist Church in Newport News.

Kelisha Gibbs and another woman left teddy bears and flowers at his door. Gibbs said he always took care of her and her kids.

“He would let me come in and do laundry if I didn’t have money, he would let me wash their clothes, he would loan me money and help out with my bills, stuff I needed for my kids.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Hampton Police Division at 727-6111 or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
