RALEIGH, N.C. (WAVY) — As Hurricane Matthew moves forward, the Red Cross is looking for volunteers to help with possible response in northeastern North Carolina.

North Carolina residents are being asked to sign up to become volunteers in case Matthew affects the state. The organization is especially in need of volunteers available to assist with sheltering, feeding and operation support.

The Red Cross said in a news release that because the track of storms often change direction, it’s important to have trained volunteers on standby to be able to deliver help quickly if needed.

“The Red Cross relies on the generosity of volunteers to support its mission. Our region is preparing for Hurricane Matthew and our communities and local volunteers are instrumental in helping those who may be affected,” said Barry Porter, regional chief executive officer of the Red Cross in eastern North Carolina.
