GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Most people have heard of the five second rule, where you wait five seconds after food has dropped on the ground to eat it.
The saying has become so common that researchers at Rutgers University actually looked to see if it makes a difference.
They dropped watermelon, bread, bread with butter and gummy candy on stainless steel, ceramic tile, wood and carpet. They then examined the bacteria levels on the food, which for some items was instant.
Their results showed while you may not get sick, the food that drops to the floor is still contaminated after five seconds.
