ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities are investigating a robbery in Isle of Wight where someone stole from a Dollar General and abducted an employee in the process.
“When he entered the store he pulled his shirt up and he did display the handgun,” Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Tommy Potter said.
The Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office says a man in a black hoodie with his face covered robbed the store Friday morning, abducted one of the employees and forced them to drive down the road in the employee’s car.
“The clerk thought that the guy was gonna take his car,” Lt. Potter said. “But then the robber said, ‘No you go, you’re going to drive me.’”
The clerk drove the suspect a mile away to a wooded area. Then the suspect ordered him to stop, then got out of the car.
The employee was eventually let go and returned unharmed, according to the sheriff’s office.
A manager and two employees were in the store at the time of the robbery, and the sheriff’s office says the manager was not the employee who was abducted.
No injuries were reported.
Friday afternoon, a sign on the door said that Dollar General would be closed between the hours of 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Investigators released these surveillance images Friday afternoon.
