PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Elizabeth River Tunnels says two eastbound lanes of the U.S. 58 Midtown Tunnel will open during morning rush hour starting Monday, October 3.
The lanes will be open from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, to help ease congestion from Portsmouth to Norfolk in the mornings.
There will be a new traffic pattern for drivers entering the eastbound tunnel:
- Those heading to Brambleton Avenue and downtown Norfolk should stay in the right lane on the Portsmouth side before entering the Midtown Tunnel.
- Those continuing down Hampton Boulevard should stay in the left lane before entering the tunnel.
Changing lanes inside the tunnel is not allowed, and will also be restricted at the tunnel’s exit on the Norfolk side.
Outside of weekday morning rush hour, drivers should expect to see single lane closures and full weekend tunnel closures while construction continues.
Full weekend closures of the Midtown Tunnel will continue, except on holidays, until January 1, 2017. Westbound traffic on U.S. 58 will not be impacted.
When construction is done on the Midtown Tunnel east, it will look similar to the rehabilitated Downtown Tunnels.
