DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Three men were arrested and charged in connection to recent vehicle break-ins in Dare County.
Authorities say on Tuesday, dispatchers received phone calls about vehicles being broken into in the Rodanthe area. One of the callers described a possible suspect vehicle, which was seen leaving Hatteras Island on the Bonner Bridge.
A Dare County Sheriff’s deputy stopped the driver near the Bodie Island Light House on Highway 12.
The driver of the vehicle, who authorities identified as 28-year-old Jerry Smyth, Jr., was a suspect in several January 2016 home break-ins in the Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo areas. In those cases, items like flat screen televisions were being taken.
Investigators took out arrest warrants for Smyth. He was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting larceny from motor vehicle, felony conspiring to break or enter a motor vehicle and carrying a concealed gun in connection to the recent vehicle break-ins. Smyth was also charged with three counts of second degree burglary, three counts of attempted second degree burglary, four counts breaking and/or entering, four counts larceny, two counts attempted larceny and two counts possession of stolen property for the January 2016 home break-ins.
Smyth is being held in lieu of $120,000 secured bond.
The passengers in the vehicle Smyth was stopped in were also charged in connection to the vehicle break-ins.
22-year-old Kentre Lamar Dillard was charged with larceny from a motor vehicle and breaking or entering a motor vehicle. 19-year-old Shandez Yamon Williams was charged with larceny from a motor vehicle, breaking or entering a motor vehicle and misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to one half of an ounce. He is being held in lieu of a $12,000 secured bond
More charges are expected on both the house and vehicle break-ins.
