NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities say a man who escaped the booking area of the Newport News City Jail Tuesday evening is back in custody.

Jail spokeswoman Dottie Wikan tells 10 On Your Side 21-year-old Daniel Panton was on the loose when he called police this morning to say he wanted to turn himself in. Police went to the location and arrested him.

Police originally arrested Panton on charges of shoplifting and possession of burglary tools. Wikan says Panton was taken to the booking area on those charges just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and was handcuffed to a bench while waiting to be processed.

During that time, Wikan say Panton escaped. Officials are still working to figure out exactly how he got away. The Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation.

Newport News deputies and police officers are investigating.
