NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man died and a woman is in the hospital after a double shooting overnight at a house party.

Newport News police say someone called 911 at 12:27 a.m. Wednesday after hearing several gunshots in the area around Wedgewood and Ross drives.

“I come outside on my front porch and there was people running everywhere,” Jim Williams, a neighbor said.

Detectives say someone shot him in the collar-bone and right wrist.

Moments later, police pulled over a car without its lights on near J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Harpersville Road. That’s when they found the second shooting victim, a 19-year-old woman.

She was shot in the right leg, according to police, and is expected to recover.

A witness at the scene told 10 On Your Side’s Rico Bush he was going to a house party with eight other people, but was told to leave when he got to the house. Someone allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing as they were leaving.

The witness says he ran and hid in a neighbor’s yard until the shooting was over. He says he then headed over to his car and found his friend, Stith, lying on the ground, breathing heavily.

He says that he tried to save Stith, but couldn’t. Neighbors saw the man trying to save Stith.

“The other guy was laying in the street, the fella that got shot and his buddy was holding him,” Jim Williams said.

Police have not released any information about possible suspects.
