JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Officers are searching for a gunman who started shooting into a crowd during an event at Elk’s Lodge early Sunday morning.
Investigators do not believe the public is in any danger, according to a spokesperson for James City County police.
Around 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a call about an armed man firing at people in the Elk’s Lodge on Howard Drive. First responders took two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds, but both are expected to survive.
Investigators say there were between 30 and 40 people in the lodge during the shooting. They have not said whether the suspect was targeting anyone specifically, or what may have motivated him.
Residents in the neighborhood said they heard the gunshots, early Sunday morning.
“Sounded like two shots actually,” says Alfred Wallace, who has lived there for around 30 years.
Wallace says the neighborhood is usually quiet and was shocked the incident took place.
“There hasn’t been any incidents around here in quite a while. I haven’t heard any incidents in years. It’s where you’d want to raise your kids, your grandkids,” he says.
Officers have not provided a description of the suspect, who got away before they arrived.
Wallace says he hopes the shooting does not give his neighborhood a negative perception.
“I hope people don’t be afraid to come here because of that. it is an isolated incident and I would be shocked to find that the people that did it live here,” he says.
