Virginia Beach light rail opposition group holds “Sign Out”

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The group “No Light Rail Virginia Beach” held a “Sign Out” Saturday afternoon to show they don’t support a plan to extend the service to Town Center.

Earlier this month an auditor said spending is on track to extend the light rail from Norfolk to Town Center in Virginia beach.

City Treasurer John Atkinson leads the opposition group and feels the spending doesn’t add up.

“What we have is a $310 million dollar railroad that’s gonna go 3.2 miles, and according to the city’s study, it’s gonna transport 1100 people a day in 2034. That’s less than three-tenths of our population would use it. Well three-tenths is not a valuable service to our citizens, it’s too small. Nobody’s gonna use it,” says Atkinson.

The opposition group says they’ll continue their “Sign Out” events in the weeks before the election.

You can give your vote on the proposed light rail November 8.
