NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – Two deaths inside a Virginia jail have prompted officials to release a list of 18 prisoners who died since 2012.
The jail’s interim superintendent told reporters on Friday that he released the list for transparency’s sake as scrutiny mounts over the facility. But he noted that inmate deaths are not uncommon in any jail.
Last year, a 24-year-old man with mental illness died in his cell of heart failure accompanied by severe weight loss. And last month, a 60-year-old died two days after asking for emergency medical help. His cause of death remains under investigation.
Both deaths drew widespread attention.
The list does not include inmate ages, but shows causes of death ranging from internal bleeding to heart problems to a suicide. Some inmates died at a nearby hospital.
