Sailor aboard locally based ship dies overseas

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The U.S. Department of Defense on Thursday confirmed that a sailor assigned to the local based USS Wasp died of a non-combat-related injury.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) Airman Devon M. Faulkner, 24, is from the Raleigh, North Carolina area, and officials say he died on Sept. 20.

Faulkner was assigned to the USS Wasp, which left from Naval Station Norfolk in late-June, and was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea.

Officials say the incident is under investigation.
