Baby sperm whale washes up on Sandbridge beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team was called out to Sandbridge beach Wednesday afternoon.

A baby sperm whale washed up on the beach.

Images from the scene, around 5 p.m., show a crowd watching up close as the Stranding Team worked.

According to WAVY News 10’s Joe Fisher, the whale was still showing signs of life, but unfortunately aquarium officials say the whale was likely in a a lot of pain, so they had to “humanely euthanize” it. They plan to take the whale back to the aquarium to perform a necropsy.

Stay with WAVY for updates.
