NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The threat of a gunman forced guards to move people at the Social Security Administration office in Newport News to a back room Tuesday.

Lou Thurston with Newport News police says the New Orleans Social Security Office told the Newport News office that someone was on the way with a gun. They provided a name of the suspect, but could not give a description of the person or the suspect vehicle.

As a precaution, security personnel at the office moved everyone into a back room. It’s not clear how long people were kept in the back room.

Office security investigated and once it was determined that there wasn’t a threat, everyone was eventually released from the room.

Police are still investigating.
