PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police are working to find out who shot and killed a father of three on Tuesday night.
According to detectives, 36-year-old Gregory Brown, of Portsmouth, was gunned down on South Street. He then reportedly traveled to a home on Swanson Parkway, where the mother of his infant son lived.
Loved ones told 10 On Your Side that Brown didn’t live in the area, but was there planning to visit the 8-month-old boy. They say he collapsed inside the home and died.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 11 p.m. A friend of the baby’s mother also came to the scene.
“I just pray for my friend that she can be better, get some understanding, justice can be served,” that friend told 10 On Your Side.
Loved ones said that Brown had three children and worked hard at Popeyes to support them.
10 On Your Side spoke to some of his co-workers on Wednesday, all shaken up by the news.
They said he was supposed to be at work in the morning, and they grew nervous when he never showed.
“We tried to call him, we got his voicemail, called the hospitals, called the Portsmouth jails to check and make sure nothing happened to him, ’cause it’s not like him to not show up to work,” said Dontrell Smith.
“We kind of felt something wasn’t right,” said Margaret Blount.
Once learning the news, some co-workers were so distraught that they had to leave for the day.
“He was a sweet person, he would come to work with a big smile on his face,” Blount said. “It’s really sad, really sad. I don’t know who would do something like this to him.”
Detectives do not have a suspect or motive in this case.
