VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Scammers are posing as the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office and telling residents they’ve missed jury duty.

Scammers threaten citizens, saying if they don’t pay a fine for missing the jury duty, they could be arrested. The scammer then asks for personal information for “verification purposes” or for payment to avoid an arrest.

The Virginia Beach Circuit Court may call to find out why someone did not show for jury duty, but court officials and sheriff’s deputies will never request personal information over the phone and will also never take a payment to avoid court process.

You can reach out the circuit court’s jury office at 757-385-4589. If you think you’ve been contacted by this scammer, call the local FBI office of Norfolk at 455-0100.
