CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Gilmerton Bridge in Chesapeake is back open to traffic after repair work was completed earlier than expected on Sunday evening.

The Chesapeake Public Works Department announced just after 9 p.m. that the repairs were finished early. City officials originally tweeted last week that the bridge would be closed from Sept. 16 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Sept. 19, at 5 a.m.

A major malfunction in June caused the bridge to become stuck in the open position for several hours. Officials in June said the weight mechanism that lifts the bridge broke, causing it to become stuck.

The bridge will resume its normal lift schedule on Sept. 19.
