NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY) – There couldn’t have been much more exuberance on the home sideline at Christopher Newport University Saturday Night. The Captains (3-0, 2-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference) converted three straight turnovers into three straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break a 21-all tie and pull away for the program’s first ever win over Wesley College.
The 42-28 win at Pomoco Stadium not only kept the Captains unbeaten, but also vaults them over the Wolverines (1-2, 1-1) for first place atop the conference standings.
CNU began the scoring spurt, convering a Wesley fumble into a 19-yard touchdown pass from K.J. Kearney to Taylor Louden, then followed that up with maybe the most comical moment of the night. Rhett Morris, seemingly trying for the squib kick on the ensuing kickoff, unintentionally or not managed to kick the ball off a Wesley special teams player.
The Captains recovered, and finished off a three-play drive with a 14-yard touchdown run by Daquan Davis to make it 35-21. The CNU defense kept the momentum going, causing a Wesley fumble, and converting it into another Davis touchdown run.
The sideline celebration spilled onto the field as the final seconds ticked away. Matt Kelchner, who announced he’s retiring as CNU’s head coach at the end of this season, earned the Gatorade bath, and left the field with his hands raised in celebration. His team is now 3-0 for just the third time in the program’s 16-year history, and will travel to the College of New Jersey next weekend.
