SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk is looking to break down ethnic barriers with a community cookout and clean-up event this weekend.

The “Breaking Down Barriers through UNITY” event is slated for Sept. 17 in the Saratoga community.

A Friday news release states several groups have partnered together building off of the city’s recent National Night Out UNITY Parade.

The groups include Community Action Coalition of Suffolk VA (CAC), Suffolk Clergy United (SCU) and the Coalition Against Poverty (CAPS) as well as the Saratoga Civic League.

The release says the partnership is aiming to change and get rid of social barriers that “halt or slow the economic growth” of individuals, families and the community.

Organizers say the event is open to the public, and that volunteers are needed.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Majdah Schiavi at 757-416-2982, or email CACofSuffolkVA@gmail.com.
