HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police say a scammer is spoofing the division’s phone number to ask residents for unpaid tax money.
The scammer claims to be with the Hampton Police Division and tells the victim they owe tax money and need to make an immediate payment. The scammer asks the victim for debit card information, including a PIN number, and tells them if they don’t pay up, an officer will come to their home.
The number that is being spoofed is the police division’s investigations bureau number.
Hampton police say they will never get involved in tax collection, and will never ask for your credit or debit card information over the phone.
Authorities expect the scam to get worse over the weekend.
