Officer Brandon Maynard with Newport News police says dispatchers received a call at 4:52 p.m. for a shooting in the 6000 block of Chestnut Avenue, near Briarfield Road.

Officers say Kevin Anthony Jackson, of the 900 block of Glenrock Drive in Hampton, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:31 p.m.

“Me and my mom kept trying to get a pulse. She was on his neck. I kept feeling his wrist,” said Mike Row. “I was talking to him. I was telling him, ‘stay alive man, don’t go out on us.'”

It’s unclear if the shots were fired from another vehicle or not. Police do not have any suspect information at this time.
