NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — An 18-year-old in Newport News is facing charges after fireworks were shot at a man on Sunday.

Justin Cornelius is charged with misdemeanor assault, three counts of contributing to delinquency of a minor and unauthorized use of fireworks in connection with the Sept. 11 incident.

Officers were called to the Riverside Rehabilitation Center around 5:43 p.m. after a 47-year-old man had reported that someone in a passing car fired a gun at him.

An investigation later found fireworks on the floorboards and under the seats of a red pickup truck that had four occupants. Police say evidence at scene showed the remains of an exploded firecracker.

Police say petitions for unauthorized use of fireworks have been obtained for three teenagers in connection with Sunday’s incident.
